Coming Up With Great Business Ideas
Author Cameron Martel | 01.10.2007 | Category Articles
It’s hard to come up with business ideas that are solid, stable, and potentially lucrative. This is even harder if your starting capital is low (or non-existent). We get that, and that’s why we’re doing our best to come up with business ideas that can be launched for as little as possible but can still grow to become large and profitable. However, we also know that you may want to follow your own ideas and dreams. How do you come up with business ideas that are all of the things mentioned above? Well, for us it’s a series of steps:
- Think of a market that needs to be addressed - We spend a bit of time wondering about which markets are being under-served, how they’re being under-served, and how a new business may be able to properly serve that market. Remember, when you are thinking of a business idea, a “market” is very deep and rich.
If you are leaning towards an idea relating to web hosting, for example, there are many different areas of web hosting that you could tackle. Perhaps you want to offer free web hosting and make an income via advertising, or perhaps you want to offer web hosting to medium sized businesses. Try to visualize the various components of the market, and rather than try to tackle the whole thing, tackle that market.
- Determine how you are going to turn an idea from inception to profitability - This is the step that stops most entrepreneurs in their tracks. What kind of idea are you going to create that is both revolutionary and profitable? Answer that question and you’ll have financial freedom and business success.
This could be something is simple as figuring out how your blog updating business will be able to generate sustainable growth, or something as complex as working out the 15 year goals of your new business idea. So long as you have something in mind that is sustainable and tangible you’re good to go.
- Work around interests and passions - If you are passionate about something why not try to find a way to make money with it? If you love computer games, perhaps you may want to launch a computer game distribution company. If you’re really into seafood the world could always use another good seafood restaurant. Having a genuine interest in the company that you are building will ensure that it doesn’t wind up on the back burner when the going gets tough.
- Go where the money is - If there’s no sustainable way to generate an income following your ideal business, modify it until there is. There’s no point in launching a business that has no future.
Always keep a pen and paper handy- you’ll never know when that great idea hits you, and it can be impossible to tell the million dollar ideas from the failed ones. Stick with it and you’ll be fine.
